Duet
Duet is a simple, cost-effective hybrid rocket motor designed to operate in static test-stand configuration at sea-level conditions. Duet was designed, manufactured, and tested over a span of 5-months with a fully remote team and met the desired performance goals.
System Specifications
PROPULSION:
Fuel: 3D-printed ABS
Oxidizer: Liquid Nitrous Oxide (N2O)
Target Performance: 100lbf, 190s SL
Design: 6061-T6 casing, injector, & nozzle retainer with a phenolic resin chamber liner and nozzle
FLUID SYSTEM:
Tank Volume: 80in3, filled from 10lb N2O bottle
Design: 6061-T6 casing and bulkheads
MANUFACTURING:
The outer casing, bulkheads, retaining rings, and injector are all made of 6061 - T6 aluminum and were all machined in-house
The test stand was configured from 80/20 T-Slot Framing and 3D printed linear bearings and interfaces.
SOFTWARE & CONTROLS:
Raspberry Pi and Load Cell bridge program to obtain thrust measurements
Remote visual monitoring system for pressure gauges
Hot Fire Test Data
Data from our second hot fire was collected via a load cell in-line with the thrust assembly. Duet achieved a peak thrust of 48 kgf or approximately 108 lbf.
Further tests and analysis will be conducted to determine other important parameters.
